What is the difference between an apostille and an authentication?

The key difference between an Apostille and an authentication lies in the destination country where the document will be used:

  • Apostille:

    • An Apostille simplifies the legalization of documents for use in countries that are members of the Hague Convention of 1961.
    • It certifies the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the person signing the document has acted, and, where appropriate, the identity of the seal or stamp which it bears.
    • Essentially, it streamlines the process, eliminating the need for further legalization by consular officials of the destination country.
  • Authentication:

    • Authentication is the process used for documents that will be used in countries that are not members of the Hague Convention.
    • This process typically involves a more complex chain of certifications, often requiring authentication by the Secretary of State and then legalization by the embassy or consulate of the destination country.
It is a more involved process than obtaining an Apostille.

In simpler terms:

  • If the country where you'll use the document is part of the Hague Convention, you'll need an Apostille.
